Don Pettit shoots his photos at 18,000 miles per hour, 240 miles from the ground. As the lead photographer on the International Space Station, Don’s task is to capture the beauty of the universe and share it with the world. Here are eight of his latest, most beautiful photographs.

‘Photographer’ is not Don’s official title though. As a flight engineer, chemical engineer and NASA Astronaut, Don conducts physics experiments and helps to operate the International Space Station. Photography to him is a hobby in many ways, but something he takes seriously.

Wielding 10 Nikon cameras and a stupendous array of lenses (seen at the bottom of this post), Don combines multiple 30 second exposure photographs to create these star trails. The result shows the luminance of the earth and stars over a time of 10-15 minutes. He’s even managed to photograph the gorgeous atmosphere.

Be sure to check out NASA’s Flickr page as well where they’re sharing plenty more of Don’s photographs!

**also I’m not sure if you’ll be able to access NASA’s site because of the government temper tantrum
